Origins of Duang Prateep Foundation
Prateep Ungsongtham, a dweller in Klong Toey Slum, has been aware
of sheer misery confronted by all her neighbors since an early age.
With strong determination to war against poverty and underprivileged
conditions in the slum, she struggled her way to a teacher training
college, and then opened the first school there. Her prime educational
concern was giving deprived families some belief in themselves and
hope for the future.
Besides her concern over education, she represented her community
in fighting against threatening eviction. Prateep together with her
neighbors put their case to the landowner, the government and the
news media, and finally rose to it triumphantly. This was to be the
first, unexpected step in a career of public service on behalf of
the urban poor. It was to bring Prateep the Magsaysay and Rockefeller
awards, which enabled her to establish the Duang Prateep Foundation
(DPF), as well as gaining her the trust of both slum people and the
government.
DPF has grown from humble beginnings in 1978 with 5 people working
in a small office. The name Duang Prateep means "flame of hope
and this flame is the foundation's symbol. Now, it has over 100
staff including volunteers, part-time helpers. In 1992, the foundation
moved into a smart new permanent building, Thailand's first comprehensive
development and resource center for a slum community
DPF is also increasingly active in rural areas of Thailand. Foundation
staff realize that the problems of the urban and rural poor are
related. The foundation's sponsorship program is providing assistance
to schools and children throughout the country. DPF has been recognized
throughout Thailand as a representative of poor people. Poverty
is still far too widespread and, with an ever widening income gap,
the foundation still faces many challenges.
